Weekend Box Office Update

2012/08/26 20:00:09 +00:00 | Jonathan James

This was a rare weekend at the box office when there were no wide releases, giving last week's top 10 a little breathing room. The top four spots are exactly the same as they were last weekend, with The Expendables 2 taking first place once again.

This week's new horror release was The Apparition, but it didn't manage to crack the top 10. A big part of this is due to the fact that Warner Bros. decided to give this film a limited theatrical run in approximately 800 theaters. Critic response to the film overwhelmingly negative, which didn't help either.

We felt that ParaNorman would perform well in it's second week and we were right on the money. Similar to Coraline, ParaNorman had strong word of mouth and only fell 39.3% from last weekend. We expect that Focus is happy with the film's performance, and it should stay in top 10 for at least another couple of weeks. Next week sees the release of The Possession, along with Lawless and Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. The Expendables 2 - $13,500,000
2. The Bourne Legacy - $9,300,000
3. ParaNorman - $8,546,000
4. The Campaign - $7,440,000
5. The Dark Knight Rises - $7,150,000
6. The Odd Life of Timothy Green - $7,125,000
7. Premium Rush - $6,300,000
8. 2016 Obama’s America - $6,238,000
9. Hope Springs - $6,000,000
10. Hit and Run - $4,675,000
