Weekend Box Office Update

After a slow couple of weeks at the box office, Resident Evil: Retribution crossed the $20 million mark this weekend and claimed the top spot. While this is a definite win for the movie, which had a production budget of $65 million, it was the lowest opening for any of the Resident Evil sequels with $21.1 million.

Resident Evil: Retribution faced very little competition, so we're not sure if this is a sign of franchise fatigue or related to the marketing budget. Either way, it's probably good enough that we'll see another entry in the series a few years from now.

Taking second place was Finding Nemo 3D, which earned $17.5 million. The Possession took third place and is a huge win for Sam Raimi and Lionsgate, as the film has reached a total domestic gross of $41 million with a production budget of only $14 million. ParaNorman also continues to hold in there at number 5 and has earned $49.3 million since opening.

Next week sees the release of Dredd, End of Watch, House at the End of The Street, and Trouble with the Curve. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Resident Evil: Retribution - $21,100,000
2. Finding Nemo 3D - $17,504,000
3. The Possession - $5,800,000
4. Lawless - $4,219,000
5. ParaNorman - $3,039,000
6. The Expendables 2 - $3,030,000
7. The Words - $2,880,000
8. The Bourne Legacy - $2,875,000
9. The Odd Life of Timothy Green - $2,511,000
10. The Campaign - $2,405,000
