Weekend Box Office Update

January has proven to be a great month for theatrical horror releases. Last year, The Devil Inside took away $33.7 million on its opening weekend and Texas Chainsaw 3D claimed the top spot this week with $23 million.

The critic response to Texas Chainsaw may not have been the most positive, but that didn't slow ticket sales and it seems likely that Lionsgate will move forward with a sequel, as the plan was for this to be the first is a series of new films.

Django Unchained passed The Hobbit for second place and has crossed  the $100 million mark by earning $20 million this weekend. The Hobbit wasn't far behind, though, earning $17.5 million and bringing its total to $262.8 million. Les Miserables also had a strong weekend, earning $16.1 million and crossing the $100 million mark since opening.

Next week sees the release of Gangster Squad and A Haunted House. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Texas Chainsaw 3D - $23,000,000
2. Django Unchained - $20,082,000
3. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - $17,525,000
4. Les Miserables - $16,117,000
5. Parental Guidance - $10,125,000
6. Jack Reacher - $9,300,000
7. This is 40 - $8,559,000
8. Lincoln - $5,258,000
9. The Guilt Trip - $4,530,000
10. Promised Land - $4,312,000
