Chances are that if you went to the theater this weekend, you were there to see Iron Man 3. The movie earned an impressive $175.3 million over the weekend, making it the second best opening in box office history. It may not have been able to top The Avengers' $207.4 million opening, but Marvel isn't complaining. The movie has been doing better than The Avengers overseas in many countries, and has earned $680 million worldwide to date.
The rest of the top ten didn't stand a chance, but the results were still really low across the board for the other nine movies. Not a single title crossed the $10 million mark, with Pain & Gain taking second place with $7.6 million. Looking at horror films still earning money outside of the top 10, Evil Dead is barely hanging in there, but has crossed $72 million worldwide. Anchor Bay dropped The Lords of Salem down to 50 theaters this weekend, and it's likely the last week for this movie. To date, it has earned $1.1 million in theaters.
The Great Gatsby and Tyler Perry Presents Peeples are the wide releases next week, but it's unlikely that either will be a match for Iron Man 3. The Eli Roth-produced horror film Aftershock will also receive a limited release next weekend and will be playing in major cities. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:
1. Iron Man 3 - $175,300,000
2. Pain & Gain - $7,600,000
3. 42 - $6,210,000
