John Boyega will now have some company Pacific Rim 2, as another lead role has been cast in the kaiju sequel.

Variety reports that Cailee Spaeny has been cast in a lead role opposite Boyega in Pacific Rim 2. Details on Spaeny's character are unknown at this time.

Earlier this year, John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Attack the Block) signed on to the sequel to play the son of Stacker Pentecost, the character portrayed by Idris Elba in the original film. Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions join Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, and Guillermo del Toro as producers on the film.

In addition to Boyega and Spaeny, Scott Eastwood is also expected to appear in Pacific Rim 2, and Variety appears to reinforce his involvement.

At Comic-Con in July, Charlie Hunnam confirmed that he will not return to play Raleigh Becket. It's currently unknown which actors from the first movie will reprise their roles in the follow-up film.

Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Netflix’s Daredevil) will helm the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film. Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) was brought on to work on the screenplay for Pacific Rim 2, with an earlier draft written by Jon Spaihts (The Mummy, Doctor Strange, Prometheus).

A Legendary Pictures film, Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled for a February 23rd, 2018 release from Universal. The movie is slated to start shooting this November in Australia, with additional filming expected to occur in China. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for more updates.
