In theaters this weekend is Gore Verbinski’s A Cure For Wellness. In the film, while trapped at a remote wellness center in Switzerland, Dane DeHaan’s character Lockhart crosses paths with a mysterious young woman named Hannah (played by Mia Goth), who undergoes her own awakening the deeper Lockhart delves into the mystery of just what is “the cure.”
At a recent press day for A Cure For Wellness, Daily Dead and several other journalists spoke with Goth discussed the journey that Hannah takes throughout the film, her experiences collaborating with Verbinski on her character, and she also shared some information on the upcoming Suspiria project from director Luca Guadagnino.
Can you take us through Hannah’s journey throughout the film?
Mia Goth: Yeah, that was something I really connected to. I found that I was able to find a lot of parallels between her life and my life. It’s quite a journey for her, and sometimes it’s thrilling, sometimes it’s terrifying, sometimes it’s exciting, and sometimes it’s painful. I connected with that, and I think those experiences are quite universal for women everywhere. That’s what I thought I would be able to bring to the role, and it’s something I continue to go through in my own life.
How did you work with Gore in order to flesh out Hannah as a character?
Mia Goth: We definitely spoke at great length about Hannah, and one of the things that Gore brought up was her perspective and how she views everything. She would say things the same way a child would ask an adult, “Why?” which can be very perplexing when you’re an adult. Oftentimes, you never really stop to even think about the “why” in different situations, but kids just have that inquisitive manner to them. So that was something we incorporated into her character.
Her unique worldview comes from the fact that she’s been so sheltered, and that’s all wonderful to be able to play around with. You have to just hope that when you’re there on the day that you’re shooting, that the magic happens and you’re able to get something special.
Did the environments you guys were shooting in inform your performance at all?
Mia Goth: They did, a lot. We did this whole tour of Germany and toured around so many different locations, one of them being this little town outside of Berlin, which used to be a hospital that was used during the first and second World Wars, and it’s considered to be the most haunted place in Germany. So to shoot nights there for weeks at a time definitely gives you this uncomfortable feeling. It definitely makes that fear she’s feeling almost tangible, and made it that much more of an immersive experience.
In regards to the upcoming Suspiria remake, is there anything you can tell us in regards to Luca’s approach?
Mia Goth: What I can say about that is that people are going to be pleasantly surprised when they realize this really isn’t a remake at all. And I think they’re really going to be shocked, too. There’s definitely a nod of the hat to Dario Argento’s Suspiria here, but we really take it to a completely different place. Luca has a real eye for the aesthetic, though, and he really knows what he wants. I think it’s going to be visually stunning.
