New Line Cinema has taken a key step forward in continuing the paranormal adventures of Ed and Lorraine Warren on the big screen.

Deadline reports that New Line Cinema has tapped David Leslie Johnson to write the screenplay for The Conjuring 3. No specific plot details for the sequel are known at this time, but the follow-up to 2016's The Conjuring 2 is expected to once again focus on another case file of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, respectively.

A director for the film has yet to be named, and although James Wan (who is currently filming Aquaman for DC) helmed the first two Conjuring films, he reportedly isn't set to direct this next film, but is still expected to produce the project with Peter Safran.

Johnson has been working on rewrites for Wan's Aquaman movie at Warner Bros., and he's also been writing A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot for New Line Cinema. Other writing credits for Johnson include 2009's Orphan and several episodes of The Walking Dead, as well as co-writing work on The Conjuring 2.

The Conjuring 3 will join the ranks of an ever-growing interconnected cinematic universe that includes the spinoff films Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and the upcoming The Nun and The Crooked Man. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for more updates on The Conjuring 3. In the meantime, what supernatural scares would you like to see the Warrens experience this time around?
