According to a new report, Universal acquired a novel manuscript titled Demonologist, with plans to turn it into a feature film. Written by Andrew Pyper, the book itself is expected to be sold at auction soon, but the studio wanted to pick up movie rights before the book found a publisher.

Robert Zemeckis' ImageMovers will produce the project, but there is no word on whether or not this is something he's interested in directing. Deadline has learned of the basic plot, which involves a professor trying to take back his daughter from a demonic spirit:

"When a professor who studies Paradise Lost accepts a free trip to Italy, a demonic spirit appears to kill his daughter, and he must go on a dark journey of discovery in hopes of getting her back. Pyper is repped by UTA and Toronto-based Anne McDermid & Associates."

This project is in the very early stages of development, so there are no additional details at this time. We'll report back as soon as we hear of any updates.
