The Forest of the Lost Souls Q&A with José Lopes: "Leading independent distributor Wild Eye Releasing releases The Forest of the Lost Souls in theaters this week.
The psychological “coming of age” horror film, written and directed by directed by José Pedro Lopes, marks the distrib’s first theatrical release. The film, which had its world premiere at the Fantasporto Film Festival on February 26, 2017, is scheduled to open in August.
We spoke to Lopes about the film on the eve of its stateside release.
Q1. Tell us about The Forest of the Lost Souls. How did it come to be?
After doing a lot of shorts, my team and I decided we want to venture into making a feature film. I had two ideas for short films. One was a coming of age story of a murderer who preyed on sadness, the other was a drama about a family dealing with suicide. Clashing them together generated "The Forest of Lost Souls". Initially, I presented it in an even called Pitching Forum in Espinho (Portugal), back in 2012. As we were chasing a project for a feature to make, this was the one we ended up doing. It was something that we could do, do well, and do by ourselves.
Q2. Any real-life incidents serve as inspiration?
On one side, I think the news we see every day of how evil people can be, was the inspiration for having such a nasty villain, someone who has no respect for others lows, for how sad they are. On the other, I delt closely with a family who lost someone to suicide and I saw how much it hurt, and much it is devastating. I wanted to capture that and put it in an unthinkable scenario where someone would take advantage of that.
Q3. How closely did you work with your cast beforehand?
I had worked with Daniela Love before in a short film called "Video Store". Her character there was an inspired film buff, talked a lot in references and was a dreamer. Coming up with Carolina for "Forest", we wanted to bring a darker version of this same character. Daniela gave a lot of insight also on how millennials think and act on some events. Jorge Mota, who plays the family father Ricardo, is a very talented stage actor, and he worked with me in making his character someone you would care about. Without them, these characters would have been more cliché driven and not as engaging.
Q4. Where was that beautiful forest located?
There is no suicide forest in Portugal. There's a big forest that separates Portugal from Spain, and people used to get lost there if they wanted to disappear, but not die. We shot in a lot of different places. Most of the dialogues were in the Caramulo Mountains (centre of Portugal), somewhere a bit North of Oporto, and the amazing glacier lake is the Sanabria Glacier Lake in Zamora, Spain.
Q5. What is the most important advice you can give to a filmmaker who is just starting his career?
I think you have to care about your team. I work in other people's films doing what I can and make friends with everyone who's into making films. And then they work with me too. We're in this together. Sure things do need hierarchy and need organization, a lot, but being kind and nice is always the most important."
