As we start gearing up for the Holiday Shopping Season, there are a new batch of home media releases arriving this week, and a few of those titles might feel right at home on your wish list this year. Heathers, a personal favorite of mine (for obvious, and some not-so-obvious reasons) is getting the Steelbook treatment this Tuesday, courtesy of RLJE Films, and in terms of recent horror releases, both 47 Meters Down: Uncaged and Bliss are both hitting Blu-ray and DVD as well.
Scream Factory is showing some love to Stacey Keach and Road Games (1981) this week, and for those of you who enjoy your sibling survival stories with a bit of a nasty twist to them, Arrow Video has put together a special edition release of Flowers in the Attic.
Other Blu and DVD films coming home on November 12th include Wicked World, The Attic, Polaroid, Darkslide, Small Town Killers, and Southern Chillers.
47 Meters Down: Uncaged (Lionsgate, Blu/Digital Combo & DVD)
Directed by Johannes Roberts and written by Roberts and Ernest Riera, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged follows the diving adventure of four teenage girls exploring a submerged Mayan city. Once inside, their rush of excitement turns into a jolt of terror as they discover the sunken ruins are a hunting ground for deadly great white sharks. With their air supply steadily dwindling, the friends must navigate the underwater labyrinth of claustrophobic caves and eerie tunnels in search of a way out of their watery hell.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
- Audio Commentary with Writer-Director Johannes Roberts, Producer James Harris, and Writer Ernest Riera
- Diving Deeper: Uncaging 47 Meters Down
Bliss (Dark Sky Films, Blu-ray & DVD)
A brilliant painter facing the worst creative block of her life turns to anything she can to complete her masterpiece, spiraling into a hallucinatory hellscape of drugs, sex, and murder in the sleazy underbelly of Los Angeles.
Flowers in the Attic: Special Edition (Arrow Video, Blu-ray)
When her husband dies in a tragic accident, widow Corrine Dollanganger (Victoria Tennant, The Holcroft Covenant) takes her four children to the ancestral family home she fled before they were born. Locked away in the attic by their tyrannical grandmother (Academy Award® winner Louise Fletcher, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), it falls to older brother and sister Chris (Jeb Stuart Adams, The Goonies) and Cathy (Kristy Swanson, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) to care for their younger siblings. But with their mother growing increasingly distant and erratic and a mysterious sickness taking hold, will any of the Dollanganger children survive to escape the clutches of the house’s cruel matriarch?
Originally published in 1979, VC Andrews novel Flowers in the Attic was a smash hit, spawning four sequels and going on to sell over 40 million copies worldwide. With undercurrents of incest and child abuse and a haunting score by Christopher Young (Hellraiser), Flowers in the Attic is a dark and chilling Gothic suspense thriller in the classic tradition.
SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS:
Heathers: Steelbook (RLJE Films, Blu-ray)
Beautiful, popular and ruthless, the Heathers are the picture-perfect queens of the social scene at Westerburg High that everyone wants to be. And that includes Veronica – or so she thought – until she meets JD. He’s the new bad boy in class with some extreme ideas about how to get even with the school bullies and mean girls. But is he prom date material or a dangerous psychopath? Starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in the classic, wickedly dark comedy that celebrates its 30th anniversary and still rules as the greatest high school movie that isn’t afraid of a little mayhem.
ALL NEW FOR THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY:
· The Legacy of HEATHERS: Interview with Michael Lehmann and Daniel Waters
CLASSIC INTERVIEWS AND MATERIALS:
Road Games (1981) (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
Stacy Keach is Pat Quid, a lone trucker who plays games to keep his sanity on long hauls through the desolate Australian Outback. Jamie Lee Curtis is a free-spirited hitchhiker looking for excitement with a game of her own. And somewhere up ahead is a maniac in a van whose game may be butchering young women along the highway. But when the killer decides to raise the stakes, Quid's game becomes personal ... and the rules of this road are about to take some very deadly turns. Director Richard Franklin (Psycho II) packs plenty of Hitchcock-like twists and suspense into this sly shocker that was nominated for four Australian Film Institute Awards and remains one of the most surprising thrillers of the '80s.
