First introduced in Epitaphs from the Abyss #3, the immortal vampire Ada will sink her teeth into her own EC Comics series this summer! Written by Corinna Bechko, illustrated by Andrea Sorrentino, colored by Dave Stewart, lettered by Richard Starkings and Comicraft's Tyler Smith, and fittingly titled Blood Type, the first issue of the new comic book series will stalk comic shop shelves this June via Oni Press, who will also give readers the chance to catch up on Ada's first appearance this Saturday, May 3rd, with the Free Comic Book Day release of Blood Type #0, which includes the original "Blood Type" story by Corinna Bechko and Jonathan Case in addition to two other spine-chilling EC Comics tales: "The Champion" from Matt Kindt and Kano as well as "Death and Pickaxes" by Chris Condon and Charlie Adlard.
To celebrate Ada sinking her teeth into Oni Press' "Summer of Fear," Daily Dead caught up with Corinna Bechko in a new Q&A feature to discuss the gory goodies that await readers in the four-issue Blood Type series and the Blood Type #0 FCBD Special!
Additionally, comic book readers on the West Coast will want to take note that Corinna will be taking part in a Free Comic Book Day signing alongside Rodney Barnes (Killadelphia) and Patrick Horvath (Free For All) from 11:00am–2:00pm PT at the Collector's Paradise in Winnetka on May 3rd!
Also, if you're looking to catch up on the resurrection of EC Comics at Oni Press, then you'll want to keep an eye out for the May 6th release of Epitaphs from the Abyss Volume 1 and the July 1st release of Cruel Universe Volume 1!

Thank you for taking the time to answer questions for us, Corinna, and congratulations on your upcoming comic book series Blood Type, featuring Ada the vampire from your previous EC Comics story of the same name (with artwork by Jonathan Case). How did you initially come up with the character of Ada, and when did you discover that she would be getting her own EC Comics series through Oni Press (making history as the first EC Comics character to get their own series after appearing in an EC Comics short story)?
Corinna Bechko: Thank you for your kind words and your interest! Ada was born from a desire to see a female vampire who was neither wracked by guilt and existential pain nor possessed by delusions of grandeur. Not that I don’t love vampires of those types, but I wanted Ada to be different. She’s confident in her abilities, fully believing in her own competence. She often leaps before she looks, always trusting that she will be able to get out of anything she gets herself into. I fell in love with that aspect of her personality in the EC Comics short and couldn’t get her voice out of my head. So, when Oni floated the idea of expanding her story last summer during San Diego Comic Con, I immediately said yes. Or maybe I should say that Ada demanded an affirmative answer. She’s very persuasive.
Blood Type will follow Ada as she washes ashore at a Caribbean resort, which feels like the perfect backdrop for bloodsucking mayhem, especially with the popularity of shows such as White Lotus. How did you decide on the tropical setting for Blood Type (which is also a unique hunting ground for a creature of the night)?
Corinna Bechko: I love dark stories that take place in sunny places. There’s a fair chance that’s because I grew up in Florida, in a tourist town that swelled with snowbirds every winter and emptied out in the summer. Living in a place like that, working and going to school, is very different from visiting. People on vacation often look at what happens while they’re away as exotic and somewhat inconsequential, but it’s a different story for the people who stay year-round. Throw a monster into this mix and you can’t help but have a lot of drama as well as beautiful and startling imagery.
Blood Type features amazing artwork by Andrea Sorrentino. What was it about Andrea and his visual style that made him the perfect fit to help bring Ada to undead life in this series?
Corinna Bechko: I’ve been so lucky to work with such amazing artists on Blood Type! Jonathan Case came up with the original design for Ada, and in doing so imbued her with a massive amount of effortless cool. It was important that we find someone able to echo this in the longer story while putting their own spin on her. Andrea has truly outdone himself here by slyly referencing the short story before diving into presenting his own take. He’s a master of both horror imagery and inventive storytelling, so you know this book will be both gorgeous and gruesome. It’s an immense pleasure every time his pages land in my inbox.
Were you influenced or inspired by any other vampire characters—in film, television, books, comics, or video games—when you were creating Ada and developing her unique personality?
Corinna Bechko: I’m a sucker (heh) for vampires in general, so it’s hard for me to pick just one or even a couple. I love Miriam in The Hunger (both the movie and the book), probably because I saw it at just the right age. I also love A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Just this weekend I saw Sinners, and was blown away. That said, I tried not to think too much about any of those stories while crafting Blood Type. If anything, I probably thought more about other kinds of female monsters, like the raptors in Jurassic Park or the Alien Queens. Like them, Ada sees absolutely nothing wrong with hunting humans.
How many issues of Blood Type can readers look forward to, and do you have plans for future Ada adventures beyond this story arc if given the opportunity?
Corinna Bechko: There will be four issues in this storyline, telling a complete story. As to other adventures? Well, Ada has been around for a long time. She’s got a lot of secrets she’d like to reveal if given the opportunity.
Ultimately, what do you hope readers take away from Blood Type?
Corinna Bechko: I hope they have a lot of fun, first and foremost! If it also makes folks think a bit about the gap between being privileged enough to vacation in paradise vs. what it feels like to actually live there, that will make me happy too. But ultimately, it’s hard enough to live in the modern world without having horror story homework. So read and enjoy, read and think deep thoughts, or just read. There’s no wrong way to enjoy a comic!
With Blood Type #1 sinking its teeth into comic shop shelves on June 11th, and your original “Blood Type” story being included in EC Presents Blood Type #0 on Free Comic Book Day (May 3rd), do you have any other projects coming up that you can tease for our readers?
Corinna Bechko: I do! My miniseries Sister Imperator, in association with Tobias Forge from the band Ghost, is out right now from Dark Horse. It’s also a horror story featuring a woman who routinely chooses violence, but in this case she’s a human. I was incredibly fortunate to work with the amazing artist Puste on the story and I’m really proud of the work we did.
