"If you heard of a mysterious village that nobody ever returns from, would you go looking for it?"
Writer Jeremy Haun and artist Alex Lins team up to "take us deep into the Ozark Mountains" in their new horror comic book series The Folk of Dooney Hollow. With colors by Trish Mulvihill and letters by AndWorld Design, the first issue will be available from Ignition Press on September 9th, and we have the first details and cover reveals!
Synopsis: "Deep in the Ozark Mountains lies the village of Dooney Hollow, hidden away from modern society for over a century. Its existence is only spoken of around campfires, in hushed tones, by people who don’t necessarily believe. Those who stumble upon Dooney Hollow never return to prove that it’s real, because dark forces lurk in the woods just outside the town gate.
Kerri is a young graduate student who goes to the Ozarks to get a feel for the land and its people – and its local legends. Little does she know how close to these legends she will get, as a chance encounter in the forest leads her to ceremonial grounds and the terrifying monster that keeps the citizens of Dooney Hollow living in fear."
“I grew up running through the hills and hollows of the Southwest Missouri Ozarks,” said writer Jeremy Haun. “It's a beautiful, lush, wonderous place. There's also this...dark, haunted side to the low hollows of the Ozarks—something old. The Folk of Dooney Hollow is a love letter to this magical, sometimes frightening place. It's a story of a group of Irish settlers that disappeared in the deep woods, on their way out west over a hundred years ago. And the horrible thing that keeps the secret of where they are today.”
“The Folk of Dooney Hollow is a story I've been wanting to tell for a long time, and I couldn't have a better partner in telling this story than Alex Lins,” added Haun. “Alex brought every single word to life. He, along with legendary color artist Trish Mulvihill, captured the very heart of the Ozarks on every page. If you've enjoyed my horror ‘HAUNIVERSE’ (trust me I cringed more than you did on that one), like Murder Podcast, The Red Mother, Haunthology, and 40 Seconds, you’re going to love this one. The Folk of Dooney Hollow connects to a larger horror mythos that I've been building for a long time.”
“Jeremy has created a visually rich mythology with The Folk of Dooney Hollow that moves at the right pace,” said artist Alex Lins. “I loved bringing this fascinating cast of characters to life and stretching myself stylistically throughout this comic. The story is filled with striking visuals and emotional moments, creating a combination that made it an exciting book to be the artist on— and exactly the kind of comic I love to read myself. Trish Mulvihill is a comics hero to me, so that is really exciting to me, and her colors in these pages are just perfect!”
“There is always something both exhilarating and eerie about going deep into any forest, almost like you are time travelling, going into something untouched and ancient, the further you get from ‘civilization,’” explained editor Jamie S. Rich. “Much like one can experience fear as you go into the recesses of a haunted house, readers will experience a similar isolating dread the deeper Jeremy and Alex take them into the woods. It’s a near universal feeling. As invigorating and freeing as it can be to return to nature, we all also know there is danger there. What awaits in Dooney Hollow will surprise and unnerve in equal measure.”
