From Marvel Arts, Abrams ComicArts’s line of stand-alone graphic novels curated by Alex Ross, comes Marvel’s master of the mystic arts in Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare. Written by Kevin J. Anderson, with art from Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín, this "beautifully drawn, mind-bending celebration of Marvel Comics’ Sorcerer Supreme" has just been released and I caught up with Kevin J. Anderson to discuss the weird horror of his new Doctor Strange story. We also have a preview that Daily Dead readers can check out right now!
What are your earliest memories of reading Doctor Strange? What specifically about the character resonated with you early on and continues to this day?
Kevin J. Anderson: Dr. Strange was always an oddball among superheroes. Not the same type of guy who wore spandex and used powers to fight the bad guys. Strange had class and intelligence, and he seemed much more cerebral than other heroes. Hulk smashed things; Stephen Strange twisted reality. I remember reading Dr Strange comics, hand me downs from a cousin who lived nearby, while sitting in my screened-in porch. I never would have dreamed that someday I’d be writing them!
Your Doctor Strange graphic novel sounds like a weird horror story in the best possible way. Can you talk about the insomnia-fueled, Lovecraft-inspired approach?
Kevin J. Anderson: That’s the point from which I started! After writing my novel Nether Station, I was heavily into the Lovecraft mythos and cosmic horror, and when Marvel and Abrams asked me to do a Marvel graphic novel, I wanted to turn my imagination to Dr. Strange and a nightmarish, Lovecraftian story. When Marvel suggested the two villains who appear in the graphic novel, that helped shape the entire storyline.
You mentioned bringing back a classic, popular villain, as well as a rare character that hasn't been seen since the 1960s. Was it fun to revisit the early Doctor Strange issues and can you discuss some of the characters you're bringing into this story?
Kevin J. Anderson: While I was developing the story with Lovecraftian horror elements (cosmic tentacled creatures and nightmarish mutant monsters) and a twisted reality, Marvel suggested the popular classic villain of Nightmare, who fit right into the setup, but more importantly they pointed me toward a very obscure creation from the 1960s, the Gulgol, introduced by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee. What an honor to resurrect a character that hasn’t been seen in more than 60 years!
Can you talk about your collaboration with Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín, and how your collaborative creative process is bringing this Doctor Strange story to life?
Kevin J. Anderson: I had worked with Raul and Patricia on our three huge Dune graphic novels, so I know the high quality of their work and their wonderful imagination. Dune comics are different from superhero comics, but they really were able to shine on this project.
Can you give our readers a tease of the terrors that await them (and Doctor Strange) in Endless Nightmare?
Kevin J. Anderson: If you think the real world is scary, wait until you see the distorted, freaky nightmare realm! And wait until you see the bizarre horrors that can emerge from the restless dreams of a sleeping god!
