Weekend Box Office Update

Although Elysium easily took first place this weekend, it still has a long way to go before it makes back its production budget. Neill Blomkamp's first film, District 9, earned $37.3 million on its opening weekend in 2009 and only carried a budget of $30 million. Elysium was reportedly produced for $115 million and will definitely need help from international ticket sales.

The Conjuring is still hanging in the top ten and has earned a total of $120.7 million in the US since opening. With a production budget of $20 million, the chances of a sequel moving forward quickly seem very likely. Speaking of sequel chances, Pacific Rim and World War Z continue to perform well internationally. World War Z crossed the $500 million globally mark this week and is now Brad Pitt's highest grossing film. Pacific Rim is also nearing the $100 million mark in the US and has pulled in an impressive $247 million internationally. Both movies have sequels in the early planning stages.

Next week sees the release of Jobs, Kick-Ass 2, The Butler, and Paranoia. Here are the top ten US results for this weekend:

1. Elysium - $30,400,000
2. We’re the Millers - $26,555,000
3. Planes - $22,525,000
4. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters - $14,600,000
5. 2 Guns - $11,128,000
6. The Smurfs 2 - $9,500,000
7. The Wolverine - $8,000,000
8. The Conjuring - $6,700,000
9. Despicable Me 2 - $5,748,000
10. Grown Ups 2 - $3,700,000
