Weekend Box Office Update

There was no question that Thor: The Dark World would dominate ticket sales at the US box office this weekend, but many were wondering how it would compare to other movies in the Marvel series.

While it was very unlikely that this would have the same strength as Iron Man 3, the Thor sequel easily surpassed the $65.7 million opening weekend for the first Thor movie. In the US this weekend, Thor: The Dark World earned an estimated $86.1 million and brought in another $240 million in international ticket sales.

Thor: The Dark World was the only new movie this weekend that had a wide theatrical release, so there's nothing too impressive to report on in the rest of the top ten. Bad Grandpa is still bringing in a decent amount of money for an R-rated comedy. With its $15 million budget, any extra money the movie earns is icing on the cake. Ender's Game took quite a dive in it's second weekend, but it was expected given the audience and critic reaction to the movie. 12 Years a Slave has been steadily building momentum and continues to expand its theatrical release.

There are no major horror releases for the rest of this year, but we do have a couple of genre releases coming up later this month. Next week sees the release of The Best Man Holiday. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Thor: The Dark World - $86,109,000
2. Bad Grandpa - $11,300,000
3. Free Birds - $11,180,000
4. Last Vegas - $11,100,000
5. Ender’s Game - $10,250,000
6. Gravity - $8,405,000
7. 12 Years a Slave - $6,600,000
8. Captain Phillips - $5,800,000
9. About Time - $5,172,000
10. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 - $2,800,000
