Last night a story popped up that a new Evil Dead movie was gearing up for production. According to Dread Central: "...long-time Sam Raimi editor Bob Murawski... has packed up and headed out to Detroit to begin work on the long talked about fourth entry into the Evil Dead franchise, which will be 'a small indie thing like the first two.' "
We held off on reporting until we had confirmation from other sources, and now we have information on the director and confirmation from Bruce Campbell.
Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Federico Alvarez has been brought on to direct a "quasi-remake" of The Evil Dead for Sam Raimi's Ghosthouse Pictures. This fits in line with previous reports that Raimi was interested in seeing a new director tackle the material.
In April, Bruce Campbell posted the following during a Reddit interview: “NEWSFLASH: We are remaking Evil Dead. The script is awesome. I will be one of the producers and possibly play the milk man.”
Bruce recently set up a twitter account (confirmed by his official website) and posted the following tweet: "Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell."
We were pretty skeptical of the original report last night, but as more information starts to pop up, it looks like there's a good chance this is really happening. Don't get upset or excited yet, though. There's no word on casting, how this fits in with the other films, and what exactly "quasi-remake" means. We'll post more information as it becomes available.
