2011/08/01 20:08:43 +00:00 | Jonathan James

Yesterday's estimates were too close to call, so we had to wait until today for updated results. The Smurfs and Cowboys & Aliens were tied last evening, but revised totals showed Cowboys & Aliens winning the weekend with $36.4 million.

Even though Cowboys & Aliens took first place, the box office gross is still disappointing for Universal, given that the film was directed by Jon Favreau, starred Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, and had a budget of around $160 million. Next week's big genre release is Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Here are the top 10 grossing films for last weekend:

1. Cowboys & Aliens - $36,431,000
2. The Smurfs - $35,611,000
3. Captain America: The First Avenger - $25,554,000
4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - $21,977,000
5. Crazy, Stupid, Love. - $19,104,000
6. Friends with Benefits - $9,275,000
7. Horrible Bosses - $7,189,000
8. Transformers: Dark of the Moon - $6,086,000
9. Zookeeper - $4,301,000
10. Cars 2 - $2,349,000
