Last year, we covered the news that Johnny Depp interested in playing reporter Carl Kolchak in a remake of The Night Stalker. A new report reveals that the project is moving forward with Shaun of the Dead's Edgar Wright in the director's chair.

According to Deadline, Wright will "oversee and shape the project" with Johnny Depp from the ground floor. This was a project that was first reported on last July:  “Like many… Depp had fond memories of the ABC telepic and series The Night Stalker, and they got Disney’s Rich Ross and Sean Bailey sparked on a pitch for Depp to potentially play tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak.”

This is a Disney production and we're most likely looking at a PG-13 rating for the film. This project is in the early stages of development, so the release of this movie is at least a couple of years out. Next up for Johnny Depp is The Lone Ranger for Disney, which is currently filming.

The original version of The Night Stalker was a 1972 TV movie that starred Darren McGavin as reporter Carl Kolchak. The movie also spawned the Kolchak: The Night Stalker TV series.
