Fear and faith were prevalent in William Friedkin's classic 1973 horror film, and they will intermingle once again in Fox's The Exorcist TV series, which has just added two new cast members to play priests.
Deadline reports that Alfonso Herrera (Sense8, Demon Inside) and Ben Daniels (Flesh and Bone, Doom) have been cast in The Exorcist TV series to play Father Tomas Ortega and Father Marcus Lang, respectively.
Father Tomas (Herrera) is described as a "warm, selfless and compassionate leader of a small but hearty little church," while Father Marcus (Daniels) is "the intense holy warrior carrying out an occupation that the church no longer acknowledges in public."
Herrera and Daniels join a cast that currently includes Brianne Howey (Scream Queens) as Charlotte Rance, a teenager who is potentially possessed by a demon following an intense accident, and Hannah Kasulka (The Fosters) as Charolotte's concerned sister, Casey.
A contemporary reimagining of William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel of the same name, The Exorcist series is being written by Jeremy Slater (The Lazarus Effect, 2015’s Fantastic Four). Director Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is expected to helm the first episode. Producing duties are handled by 20th Century Fox Television and Morgan Creek Productions, with Slater executive producing along with James Robinson, David Robinson, and Barbara Wall.
The series is described as “a propulsive, serialized psychological thriller following two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession, and confronting the face of true evil.” So far, Fox has only ordered a pilot episode for The Exorcist, so we’ll have to wait and see if a full series order is placed.
