Next Fest celebrates the intersection of film and music and the renegade spirit of independent artists. Tickets go on sale to Sundance Institute members today and all others tomorrow.

In addition to a 10th Anniversary screening of Napoleon Dynamite with Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery as the festival’s kickoff event on August 7, Next Fest will present the Los Angeles premieres of six films that first screened at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and offer unfettered creativity and fresh perspectives. The program features a zombie love story, an Iranian-set vampire movie, a modern tale of buried treasure, a thriller about a mysterious soldier, and films that explore the perils of artistic ambition amongst
gang life in Watts and the literary world of New York respectively.

Each film screens once at the Theatre at Ace Hotel August 8-10 and will be paired with either a special music act that shares a complementary artistic sensibility or conversations that bring together filmmakers with those who inspired them. The Sundance Film Festival programming staff selected the films and music acts for Next Fest.

Trevor Groth, Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, said, “In the heart of one of the most creative cities in the world, Next Fest will launch a new wave of film and music talent into the artistic atmosphere. The Theatre at Ace Hotel, with its roots in cinematic trailblazing, will serve as the ideal hub for this cultural adventure.”

Sundance Institute members have access to a host of benefits related to Next Fest, including the ability to purchase tickets today, before they go on sale to the general public tomorrow. Directed by Joshua Zeman, the documentary examines the urban legends of The Candyman, The Killer Clown, The Baby-Sitter and the Man Upstairs, and The Hookman. The DVD release will also include seven special features on the urban legends.

Joshua and Rachel travel to Houston, Texas where they explore the tainted candy legend parents fear every Halloween. In Columbia, MO they compare The Baby-Sitter and the Man Upstairs legend to the unsolved murder of Janett Christman - a babysitter found murdered in 1950. In Texarkana, Texas, the filmmakers investigate the real life case of a killer known as The Phantom and how it inspired "The Hook" urban legend. Joshua and Rachel then head to Chicago to answer the question of how clowns became so evil and creepy to the public.

Killer Legends director Joshua Zeman previously directed the critically acclaimed horror documentary Cropsey. "I'm incredibly excited about bringing this film to fans of both urban legends and true crimes. I've always wanted to explore the two together, and Killer Legends was the perfect opportunity."

London May Cast in Massacre: "Massacre centers around Marianne James, played by New Zealand actress, writer and Suicide Girl, Pandie Suicide (Ditch Day Massacre, David Lynch’s “Crazy Clown Time”), a young woman who wakes up at the site of a grisly mass murder and can’t remember what happened. This unique film, which is currently prepping to go into production this July via Minonina Films, features both a female writer, as well as a female producer and will see the lead female role taking a slight departure from a more traditional female horror role.

London May, known for his role as drummer/bass player in the legendary Samhain - Glenn Danzig's post-Misfits and pre-Danzig death-rock infused horror punk band - has been cast in a different kind of role - this time as a Detective. Briefly stepping away from the drum kit and guitars, the musician and actor, trained in both improv and theater, recently made his Los Angeles stage debut in ‘The Duchess of Malfi’, and has now signed on to short slasher flick Massacre, a bloody, independent horror film directed by Joe Hendrick (Ditch Day Massacre, Skitta Merink) and produced by Michel Rangel (Smiley, Instructions Not Included).

Director Joe Hendrick on casting May as the Detective:

"London May was in character the moment we shook hands for the first time in the parking lot - it was clear he had done his homework. With every question of detail, every question regarding character quirks, London May either gave me the answer I had been looking to hear or an answer that showed me this guy is going to bring more to the table than what I can with this character."
