Indie Spotlight Q&A with Lauren Lakis from Horror House

by Tamika Jones

Horror House is a compilation of five stories surrounding one house. How did you get involved with this project?

Lauren: I was looking at breakdowns for projects like I normally do everyday, and I saw the listing for Horror House. It jumped out at me and I knew I had to audition for it!

As an artist, what convinced you or inspired you to portray Helen?

Lauren: When I saw the character description for Helen, it immediately caught my attention. They were looking for a caucasian girl who could speak Japanese or speak English with a Japanese accent...it just so happened that I had recently spent about 4 months living and working in Tokyo, Japan...after that experience I was hoping to find a project that would put my knowledge of the language and culture to use, but I never thought I would actually find it! I was very excited for the opportunity to bring that chapter of my life into my acting.

Besides that, Helen is a character with so much going on emotionally beneath the surface. She is an emotionally and physically abused girl, in a very vulnerable time of her life, trying to make sense of what it means to be loved and love in return. It’s a very sad situation. As an actor, it required a great deal of commitment to Helen’s internal world; I needed to be brave enough to isolate myself inside of her head. I knew it would be challenging in that way, so I felt inspired to take the role on.

Is working within the horror genre something you enjoyed doing, and would you ever make any more horror films? Or does the genre not matter as long as the film has a story or a character that speaks to you?

Lauren: I’ve actually done a LOT of horror films! I love working in all genres, it really doesn’t matter so much to me. The story and characters are the most important, as well as the message of the film. I often put myself in the position of the audience before accepting a role; I ask myself how I would feel or what I would take away from the film if I were to watch it, and then I go from there. I feel most at home in the drama/suspense/thriller genre, but I’ve been exploring more comedic work this year. Comedy is slightly terrifying, I’m having fun with it.

Are there any fun or interesting stories from the set that you would like to share?

Lauren: Well, it was a pretty professionally run set, everyone was very focused on the process. However, I will say that we spent a lot of time with the prop body from one of the other stories in the anthology, Hot Stuff. He even joined us for dinner...

What was it like to work with a horror icon like Lloyd Kaufman?

Lauren: I haven’t actually met Mr. Kaufman! We didn’t share any scenes together, so we were never on set on the same days. Hopefully I’ll meet him at an upcoming screening of the film!

In the film, Lloyd plays a real estate agent. If someone sold you a house that you believed was haunted, would you continue to stay in the house?

Lauren: That depends on the personality of the alleged ghost! I would definitely try to make contact...and decide from there. I have an interest in all things supernatural, it doesn’t scare me!

Do you have any projects coming out in the near future?

Lauren: I do! I am finishing the last of ADR this week on ROWS, a feature film that will most likely be out in early 2014. I shot a small role on Comedy Central’s Kroll Show, which will air as part of season 2. American Girls, a feature film I worked on last summer, will be coming out this fall...Appleton and Gun Woman are two other feature films that I shot this year, to come out in 2014. There are also a few surprises coming that I’m not allowed to mention...all other projects can be found on my IMDb page.
