The traps were once again set on the big screen with Lionsgate's release of Jigsaw, and the eighth film in the Saw franchise played a deadly and successful game, taking in the top spot at the box office in its opening weekend.

According to Box Office Mojo, Jigsaw raked in an estimated $16.5 million in its first weekend in US theaters, taking the top spot from Lionsgate's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, which finished in second place with $10 million in its second weekend in cinemas. Despite taking the top box office spot, Jigsaw's $16.5 million debut is only the seventh highest of the franchise's eighth films, with only Saw VI having a lower opening.

That didn't stop Jigsaw from bringing in $9.5 million internationally, though, and the film could have some staying power in theaters, although we'll have to see how it fares once Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok hits US big screens on November 2nd.

The natural disaster movie Geostorm took the third spot with a $5.67 million second weekend haul, and Blumhouse's Happy Death Day took in $5 million in its third weekend at the box office, bringing its overall domestic total to just over $48 million.

We'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated as more box office numbers come in. Until then, did you go to the movies this past weekend? What did you see? Let us know in the comments below!
