While we might never see his intriguing take on the Alien franchise come to fruition, filmmaker Neill Blomkamp isn't slowing down anytime soon, as he has launched an independent, VFX-centric production company called Oats Studios that will release experimental short films, one of which is teased in a new trailer featuring some familiar faces.

In order to have creative freedom and high audience engagement outside of the big studio system, Blomkamp is launching Oats Studios, with plans to release the short films for free on the studio's YouTube page while also releasing priced versions on Steam that come complete with supplemental features. On Twitter, Blomkamp mentioned that these extras could include "3D models / Vfx assets/ concept art/ all the raw footage / all music etc."

Blomkamp, who directed District 9, Elysium, and at one point was lined up to direct a follow-up film to Aliens, is open to the idea of developing Oats Studios short films into full-length features if they are well-received, and the Volume 1 trailer certainly shows that there is enough material here to deliver a big-screen adventure on the epic scale that is synonymous with Blomkamp's work.

We'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated on Oats Studios as more details are revealed, and in the meantime, you can watch the Volume 1 trailer, featuring Sigourney Weaver, Sharlto Copley, and Dakota Fanning.
