Viewers of Martin Scorsese's 2010 film or readers of Dennis Lehane's 2003 novel, both named Shutter Island, may still be haunted by the Ashecliffe Hospital. Now HBO and Paramount Television are charting a return to the island-bound mental institution with the development of a TV series based on the film that's aptly titled, Ashecliffe. Scorsese is set to direct the pilot off a script by Lehane.
Deadline reports that Ashecliffe will follow events at the mental hospital for the criminally insane before the timeline of the first film, in which Leonardo DiCaprio played Edward "Teddy" Daniels, a US Marshal investigating the disappearance of a patient from the cryptic facility in 1954. The show will take a close look at the founders of the hospital and the way they approach treating—at times controversially—the mental illnesses of patients.
The movie was directed by Scorsese off a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis that was based on Lehane's novel. In addition to collaborating on the pilot, Scorsese and Lehane will also executive produce alongside a host of others. Tom Bernardo is also attached, co-writing the show with Lehane.
Scorsese directed the pilot episode of Boardwalk Empire for HBO back in 2010, the same year Shutter Island was released in theaters.
