This weekend really marks the start of studios pushing out their tentpole movies to the masses. While Iron Man 3 made a big splash at the box office when it was released, four movies broke the $30 million mark this weekend and Fast & Furious 6 surprised everyone by nearly hitting $100 million.
Fast & Furious 6 set a new franchise record with $98.5 million and should have solid ticket sales on Monday as well. It's unlikely anyone thought this would happen after the release of the first movie and we doubt Universal is going to give up on this franchise any time soon. The Hangover III earned $42.4 million over the weekend and has made $54.2 million since opening earlier this week. While it may sound like a decent number, it's not great when you consider the fact that The Hangover beat it with $44 million in 2009 and The Hangover Part II earned $85.9 million on its opening weekend.
Star Trek Into Darkness took third place, earning $38 million and bringing its total to $146.8 million. It's not performing terribly, but also isn't going to do much better than 2009's Star Trek and carried a higher budget than the previous film. Epic is in fourth place with $34 million, while Iron Man 3 added another $19.4 million to it's massive worldwide take. Iron Man 3 has earned over $1.1 billion at the box office and should end up as the biggest or one of the biggest movies of the year.
