Weekend Box Office Update

Unfortunately for the new movies at the box office this weekend, Gravity continues to fight off the competition and held onto the top spot at the US box office for the third weekend in a row. The sci-fi film earned another $31 million, bringing its domestic total to $170.6 million. As we've said before, expect Gravity to hang out in the top ten for a while and we wouldn't be surprised to see it get a re-release early next year if it picks up some major Academy Award nominations.

October is usually seen as a big month for horror movies, but Carrie was the only wide release this month. Unfortunately, the movie only managed to take third place with $17 million. With a modest production budget of $30 million, this movie is unlikely to be considered a financial failure, but it didn't pull in the kind of numbers it was expected to. Was it too similar to the original for horror fans to care? Did the marketing give away too much to those who had never seen the original? Did the R-rating hurt it? Those are the questions probably being asked by those involved in making the movie right now.

Insidious Chapter 2 is another horror movie in the top ten. Although it's barely hanging in there at number ten, any extra money this movie earns is worth noting. Produced for only $5 million, Insidious Chapter 2 brought in $1.5 million this weekend, allowing it to cross the $80 million mark in the US.

Next week sees the release of Ridley Scott's The Counselor and Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.  Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Gravity - $31,030,000
2. Captain Phillips - $17,300,000
3. Carrie - $17,000,000
4. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 - $10,100,000
5. Escape Plan - $9,800,000
6. Prisoners - $2,065,000
7. Enough Said - $1,800,000
8. The Fifth Estate - $1,714,000
9. Runner Runner - $1,625,000
10. Insidious Chapter 2 - $1,533,000
