Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is the first major theatrical horror release in over two months and while the series remains popular, it wasn't able to dethrone Frozen at the box office. Disney's Frozen earned $20.7 million over the weekend and is less than $3 million away from reaching the $300 million mark in the US. To date, it has earned more than $639 million worldwide.
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones took second place with $18.2 million. Its opening weekend may be a series sequel low, but it's far from a disappointment. The Marked Ones had a smaller release in only 2,867 theaters compared to an opening on 3,412 screens for Paranormal Activity 4. The movie had a production budget of $5 million and will likely be profitable by next weekend. With Paranormal Activity 5 set for release on October and pretty decent fan reaction to The Marked Ones, we don't think Paramount will stop making these movies any time soon.
The rest of the top ten is about as expected, with The Hobbit sequel, The Wolf of Wall Street, and American Hustle rounding out the top five. These movie should remain popular for some time, especially with the Oscar buzz surrounding The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle. Next week sees the release of The Legend of Hercules on 2,000 screens, so expect the top ten to be mostly unchanged from what you see below:
