Weekend Box Office Update

This weekend saw 22 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon 2 fight for the top spot, but 22 Jump Street easily won the weekend with $60 million. After the success of 21 Jump Street, the sequel had no problem filling theater seats and should surpass the first movie's total US theatrical take ($138.4 million) without issue.

In second place was How to Train Your Dragon 2, which earned $50 million in the US over the weekend. This is about $7 million better than the first movie's opening in 2010, so DreamWorks should be pleased and a third movie is already in the works.

Maleficent took third place with $19 million, while The Fault in our Stars earned $15.7 million in fourth place. X-Men: Days of Future Past crossed the $200 million mark in the US over the weekend and Godzilla is about a week away from doing the same.
