Weekend Box Office Update

2011/12/18 21:36:50 +00:00 | Jonathan James

This was an interesting week for big releases at the box office. Both Sherlock Holmes and Alvin & the Chipmunks underperformed, while Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol had a strong limited opening.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows didn't come close to reaching the $62 million earned by the first film. Whether it was a marketing problem or the lack of an A-list actor filling the main villain role, audiences didn't flock to see this movie as expected.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol's limited opening strategy paid off. With only 425 theaters showing the film this weekend, Ghost Protocol still earned $13 million. It also didn't hurt that The Dark Knight Rises preview was showing before certain IMAX prints of the film.

Next week sees the release of The Adventures of Tintin, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and the wide release of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Here are the top 10 box office results for this weekend:

1. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - $40,020,000
2. Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked  - $23,500,000
