To the joy of millions of genre fans around the world, Guillermo del Toro won the Academy Award for Best Director. del Toro won the award in a category that includes four other talented filmmakers: Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Jordan Peele (Get Out), Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), and Phantom Thread (Paul Thomas Anderson). Guillermo del Toro accepted the Academy Award to a resounding round of applause from those gathered at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood for the 90th Oscars ceremony.

This is a major achievement for del Toro, who delivered a speech as emotional and inspirational as the words he shared at the Golden Globes earlier this year. Del Toro was previously nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay for Pan's Labyrinth in 2007, but now the master of imaginative storytelling has earned the relic of a lifetime to add to his collection, and we couldn't be more thrilled.
