Previously in the works as a TV series at Fox and as a movie at Universal, an adaptation of Locke & Key is once again moving forward, as Hulu has ordered a pilot episode based on Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's Lovecraftian comic book series with Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange) taking the directing reins for the anticipated episode and Carlton Cuse (Bates Motel) set as a showrunner.
The exciting news for Locke & Key fans was reported by Deadline, who revealed that Hulu has ordered a one-hour pilot episode based on the popular IDW comic book series that follows three orphaned siblings who move into a creepy mansion in Maine that is home to more than just cobwebs and creaky floorboards.
Hill wrote the script for the pilot episode, which is described as a "horror/fantasy drama" by Deadline, and he worked with Carlton Cuse (Lost, The Strain) to develop the adaptation of his work. Cuse, who has in recent years helped bring great, character-centric storytelling to the small screen with Bates Motel and Colony, will be the showrunner for the Locke & Key series should it move forward beyond the pilot episode at Hulu. Cuse is also executive producing the project with Joe Hill, Derrickson, Lindsey Springer, Ted Adams, and David Ozer.
Director Derrickson is no stranger to the horror genre, having helmed Deliver Us from Evil, Sinister, and The Exorcism of Emily Rose prior to directing Doctor Strange for Marvel. Deadline reports that if Locke & Key is ordered to series, Derrickson would likely helm several episodes in addition to the pilot.
Since only a pilot episode has been ordered by the streaming service at this time, we'll have to wait and see if the show will be ordered to series at Hulu, and we'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are revealed. For those unfamiliar with Locke & Key, here is the synopsis and a look at the cover art for the comic book series (via IDW):
"Written by Hill and featuring astounding artwork from Gabriel Rodriguez, Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them… and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all…"
