Press Release: November 13, 2025—New York, NY—Comixology Originals and Stout Club Entertainment announce Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story, a new limited comic series about a naïve dentist who takes part in a sinister plot to profit from the golden teeth of a mysterious patient. The 5-issue horror suspense thriller written by Rafael Scavone with art and color by Eduardo Ferigato, letters by Deyvison Manes, covers by acclaimed artist Rafael Albuquerque and edits by Greg Lockard will be released monthly from Amazon’s Comixology Originals exclusive digital content line. Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #1 drops on December 9, 2025.

Now, with Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story, Brazilian writer Rafael Scavone, whose comics include Wonder Woman, All-Star Batman, Hit-Girl, the adaptation of A Study in Emerald, Hidden Society, Sliced, Funny Creek, and Red Tag, revisits Hailstone, the seemingly sleepy isolated Montana town featured in his previous comic series of the same name.

Set during the Great Depression, Devil’s Luck follows Tim Beacon, a dentist stuck in a remote mining town, who is desperate to fund his California dream. “My background as a historian frequently leads me to be curious about specific passages in history, and I enjoy very much diving into the details of a given period and catching some things to bring back into a fictional story. In Devil’s Luck I picked the worst year of the Great Depression not only due to the social and financial turmoil in the U.S., but also because of the skyrocketed price of gold. This helped me ambush the characters in their personal hell of greed and treason and the main character of Devil’s Luck is a dentist, an ordinary profession nowadays, but a rare one in the 1930s.”

Brazilian artist Eduardo Ferigato, whose comics art includes Radiant Black, Self Made, Last Flight Out, Ultraman and the indie graphic novel Opala 76, created a new inking and color style just for Devil’s Luck making the tense sequences inside the mine a thing of a chilling beauty. “As soon as I read Scavone’s script, I couldn’t wait to start drawing,” says Eduardo Ferigato. “It’s such an engaging and thrilling story — full of greed, betrayal, and a touch of the occult. While I was exploring different inking styles to capture the right visual tone, something Rafael Albuquerque told me really stuck: in a horror story, mood is far more important than perfect lines. That became my guiding compass for the book — dark, gritty, and full of shadows, much like Scavone’s characters themselves. I hope readers enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed bringing it to life.”

Scavone continued, “I'm super excited for folks to read it because Devil’s Luck has all the elements of a good horror comic. While Hailstone mixed horror with sci-fi and western, Devil’s Luck creeps to a much darker corner, merging psychological horror and violent crimes with a twist of the supernatural.”

This gripping and haunting series will be released monthly from Amazon’s Comixology Originals exclusive digital content line beginning with Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #1 on December 9, 2025. Hailstone Vol 1, set during the Civil War, is available digitally from Comixology Originals and in paperback from Dark Horse Books.

Both Rafael Scavone and Eduardo Ferigato will be at CCXP in Sao Paulo, Brazil, December 4-7, 2025.

Praise for Hailstone

“Hailstone delivers the goods as only the best Westerns can. The visually stunning period artwork by Rafael de Latorre alone is worth the price of admission but add Rafael Scavone’s engaging mystery and world building and Hailstone is an instant hit.”

—Jimmy Palmiotti (Jonah Hex, Harley Quinn)

“A killer winter in a closed valley, townsfolk disappearing, a beast in the forest and a mystery in the factory – I don’t know what genre this is but I'm loving it and I’m hooked!”

—Frank Quitely (Jupiter’s Legacy, The Authority)

“A horror story set during the civil war that transcends genres and is just flat-out great comics.”

—Scott Snyder (Canary, Batman)
