HELLBOY IN HELL: NOTHING BUT BLOOD Interview With Cyrille Pomès

"All Hell Breaks Loose in This Two-Issue Comics Event

Legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is revisiting one of the most iconic chapters in Hellboy history with a brand new two-issue comic event, Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood. Mignola is teaming up with internationally acclaimed artist Cyrille Pomès (Moon, 6,000 Miles to Freedom) in his Hellboy Universe debut to chronicle a demonic uprising in the underworld."

With Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood #1 hitting comic book shops today, I caught up with artist Cyrille Pomès to talk about connecting with Mike Mignola, drawing Hellboy for this new mini-series, and much more:

Can you talk about the impact that Hellboy and Mike Mignola have had on you and your art?

Cyrille Pomès: I discovered Mike Mignola back then through his work at Marvel, with that unique and unsettling art style for the teenager I was, which I was thrilled to find again in Hellboy a few years later.

How did you end up connecting with Mike Mignola? And what were your discussions that led to you taking on Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood?

Cyrille Pomès: I first met Mike through Facebook and the compliments he regularly gave on my posts, before meeting him later in Los Angeles—where he was living at the time—over lunch, during which I didn't beat around the bush and asked him if we could work together.

Mike had the beginning of the script for Nothing But Blood sitting in his drawer, and spontaneously suggested dusting it off.

Can you speak to the process collaborating with Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart to bring this story to life?

Cyrille Pomès: Mike gave me a huge amount of freedom in staging the two issues, as well as a hand in writing the second one, and Dave came on board to bring all his talent while respecting the Hellboy in Hell visual style, with its dark colors and ash-gray skies.

This 2-part story centers on Hellboy in the midst of a demonic uprising. There's a lot of action and creatures in this first issue. What did you enjoy most about working on this miniseries?

Cyrille Pomès: I really enjoyed drawing the action scenes scattered throughout the two issues, tackling those epic battles of HB against giant monsters that are a genre in themselves.

Staging Hellboy's more contemplative wandering through the desolate landscapes of Hell, with his monolithic and powerful poses, was also a wonderful challenge.

Can you talk about a favorite panel or page that you drew in this first issue?

Cyrille Pomès: Even if the answer seems obvious, the very first panel of the episode was a truly emotional moment.

Drawing Hellboy is far from trivial in my career. That first panel was also taking a bit of a risk with Mike, since that gaunt, emaciated doe didn't appear in his script.

He approved it with the kindness that characterizes him.

What can you tease about the terrors that await readers and Hellboy over the two issues?

Cyrille Pomès: As little as possible, of course! I can still say that we will stay true to the dark and poetic narrative tradition of the original Hellboy in Hell, while exploring a place and an era never before seen for the red demon.
