Taken 2 dominated the box office on its opening weekend. While there was a built in audience due to the success of the first film, the movie still performed better than expected with a $50 million opening. To put things in perspective, Taken earned $24.7 million on its opening weekend.

Positive word of mouth kept Hotel Transylvania in second place this weekend, earning $26.3 million and bringing its domestic total to $76 million. The big surprise of the weekend is Frankenweenie, which only made it to fifth place with $11.5 million. The success of Hotel Transylvania definitely had something to do with the lower ticket sales, but this movie was released in 3D and IMAX, so it had the benefit of higher ticket prices to boost its weekend total. Whether it was the plot, marketing, or black & white, the movie did not interest the average American moviegoer enough run out to the theater, despite positive reviews and Tim Burton's name behind it.

Next week continues horror-themed releases with Sinister. Other movies opening next week include Argo, Seven Psychopaths, and Here Comes the Boom. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Taken 2 - $50,000,000
2. Hotel Transylvania - $26,300,000
