Rio 2 had a strong showing this weekend, but it wasn't enough to dethrone the Captain America sequel from the top spot. Captain America: The Winter Solider earned an estimated $41.3 million in the US this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $159 million. Worldwide, the movie has earned $476 million.

Rio 2 placed second with $39 million, which puts it around $200,000 shy of Rio's opening weekend back in 2011. Oculus is the first wide theatrical horror release in a couple of months and it earned a respectable $12 million on 2,648 screens. With a budget of only $5 million and this being a Blumhouse production, a sequel moving forward could be likely if it can perform well over the next couple of weeks.

Everything else on the top ten earned under $10 million, including Draft Day, which placed fourth and was one of the new releases this weekend. Next week sees the release of Bears, A Haunted House 2, Heaven Is For Real, and Transcendence. Here's a look at this week's top ten:

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $41,398,000
2. Rio 2 - $39,000,000
3. Oculus - $12,000,000
4. Draft Day - $9,750,000
5. Divergent - $7,500,000
6. Noah - $7,450,000
7. God’s Not Dead - $5,485,000
8. The Grand Budapest Hotel - $4,050,000
9. Muppets Most Wanted - $2,193,000
10. Mr. Peabody & Sherman - $1,825,000
