Daily Dead’s 2019 Horror & Sci-Fi Fall Movie Preview

Happy September, dear readers! The best time of the year is upon us, where the weather is getting cooler, kids are back in school, and we have a brand new batch of movies to get excited about coming to both the big and small screens throughout the next few months.

In September, we’ve got IT Chapter Two, Satanic Panic, Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell, Bliss, Villains (one of my absolutely favorite films of 2019 thus far), Haunt, Freaks, Artik, Ad Astra, and so many more films on the docket, which should get you primed for Halloween season.

Then, October kicks off with the already polarizing Joker, followed up by the animated Addams Family movie, Along Came the Devil 2, Mary, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite (my most anticipated movie of the fall season), Robert Egger’s The Lighthouse, Trick from Patrick Lussier, Zombieland 2, and Travis Stevens’ The Girl on the Third Floor featuring Phil Brooks (CM Punk).

And finally, we get some cinematic comfort food to soothe us as we deal with our post-Halloween blues, with Terminator: Dark Fate, Doctor Sleep, The Lodge (which will mess you up forever) and Knives Out being released during November.

To keep track of all the great horror and sci-fi films coming out in the next few months, here’s a rundown to help you get ready.

SEPTEMBER:

Clownado (VOD – 9/3; DVD – 9/17)

Cursed demonic circus clowns set out on a vengeful massacre using tornadoes. A stripper, Elvis impersonator, truck driver, teen runaway, and a dude get caught in the supernatural battle between femme fatal and the boss clown from hell.

Gags the Clown (Digital – 9/3)

Dopplegänger/Bloody Disgusting

A small city in Wisconsin is terrorized by a mysterious clown who roams the streets late at night with nothing more than a handful of black balloons. The local news stations scramble to break the story on who he is and what he wants while a group of high schoolers see the clown’s arrival as an excuse to create a little trouble themselves. The police try to maintain order in a city that has gone clown crazy and a conservative podcast host vows to put a stop to the clown known as Gags while broadcasting his “clown hunt” on social media for the world to see.

The Wrath (Digital – 9/5)

In this supernatural creeper set in 14th century Korea, a curse is killing the sons of the kingdom’s highest-ranking official.  When the final son dies, his pregnant widow, Ok-bun, must face vicious family politics and the vengeful spirit descending on the household. The Fanatic (Digital/VOD – 9/6)

Moose is a rabid movie fan who is obsessed with his favourite celebrity action hero, Hunter Dunbar. When he is cheated out of his opportunity to finally meet Hunter, Moose gets a little help from his friend Leah, a well-connected paparazzi photographer, who knows how to find celebrity homes. Moose turns to stalking to get the celebrity interaction he feels he deserves, and while harmless at first, Moose's actions begin to take a dark turn as his obsession grows stronger. As the visits continue to escalate, Hunter Dunbar finds himself in increasing danger.

IT Chapter Two (In Theaters – 9/6)

Because every 27 years evil revisits the town of Derry, Maine, “IT CHAPTER TWO” brings the characters—who’ve long since gone their separate ways—back together as adults, nearly three decades after the events of the first film.  Bill Skarsgård returns in the seminal role of Pennywise.  James McAvoy (“Split,” upcoming “Glass”) stars as Bill, Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty,” “Mama”) as Beverly, Bill Hader (HBO’s “Barry,” “The Skeleton Twins”) as Richie, Isaiah Mustafa (TV’s “Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments”) as Mike, Jay Ryan (TV’s “Mary Kills People”) as Ben, James Ransone (HBO’s “The Wire”) as Eddie, and Andy Bean (“Allegiant,” Starz’ “Power”) as Stanley.

Reprising their roles as the original members of the Losers Club are Jaeden Lieberher as Bill, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley, Sophia Lillis as Beverly, Finn Wolfhard as Richie, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben, Chosen Jacobs as Mike, and Jack Dylan Grazer as Eddie.

Satanic Panic (In Theaters/Digital – 9/6)

At the end of a long day and not enough tips, her last delivery turns out to be for a group of Satanists looking for someone to sacrifice. When members of the group start missing, they soon learn that this myth is more real than they thought, making this 13th investigation one they will come to regret.  

Empathy Inc. (In Theaters – 9/13; Digital/VOD – 9/24)

Hotshot venture capitalist Joel has a multimillion-dollar deal go up in smoke, and he and his actress wife Jessica are forced to move in with her parents and start from scratch. At the lowest and most desperate moment in his life, Joel meets old friend Nicolaus and his business partner Lester, who are seeking investors in a new technology known as XVR—Xtreme Virtual Reality—from their company Empathy, Inc., which is said to offer the most realistic and moving experiences for users by placing them in the lives of the less fortunate. Joel gets the startup its funds but soon discovers that the tech's creators have far more sinister uses in store for their creation and that the reality it provides its customers isn't virtual.

FREAKS, which stars Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Grace Park, Amanda Crew, and Lexy Kolker, is a genre-bending psychological sci-fi thriller. A disturbed father (Hirsch) locks his 7-year-old daughter (Kolker) in a house, warning her of mysterious dangers outside. But the mysterious Mr. Snowcone (Dern) convinces the girl to escape and join him on a quest for family, freedom, and revenge.

He opens up to his new companion, AUGGIE, and is recognized and appreciated by her. He feels the ache of loneliness dissipate. AUGGIE reawakens a passion in Felix, and to his own surprise, he begins to fall for her. On the positive side, she's finally painting again, but she's also developing a strange desire for blood. As someone who has never been able to control her vices in the first place, Dezzy is quickly and violently consumed by this bloodlust.

The authorities haven't ID'd the body just yet, but Zeke’s wife (Virginia Newcomb) and his daughter are suspicious already.

First Love (NY/LA – 9/27; Expanding 10/4)

Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

By turns darkly hilarious and heart-wrenching, PARASITE showcases a modern master at the top of his game.

Zombieland 2: Double Tap (In Theaters – 10/18)

In the sequel, written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and Dave Callaham, through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, these four slayers must face off against the many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.

Girl on the Third Floor (In Theaters/Digital – 10/25)

Paradise Hills (In Theaters/Digital – 11/1)

The facility is run by the mysterious Duchess (Milla Jovovich) where calibrated treatments including etiquette classes, vocal lessons, beauty treatments, gymnastics and restricted diets, revolve all physical and emotional shortcomings within two months. The outspoken Uma finds solace and friendship in other Paradise Hills residents -- Chloe (Danielle McDonald), Yu (Awkwafina) and Mexican popstar Amarna (Eiza Gonzalez). Uma soon realizes that lurking behind all this beauty is a sinister secret. It's a race against the clock as Uma and her friends try to escape Paradise Hills before it consumes them all.

Terminator: Dark Fate (In Theaters – 11/1)

Doctor Sleep (In Theaters – 11/8)

“Doctor Sleep” continues the story of Danny Torrance, 40 years after his terrifying stay at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining.  Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson and newcomer Kyliegh Curran star in the supernatural thriller, directed by Mike Flanagan, from his own screenplay based upon the novel by Stephen King.

Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace.  But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.”  Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.
