You know the phrase "sometimes bad things happen to good people"? Truer words couldn't be spoken about the unfortunate fate that befell filmmakers Shane Brady and Emily Zercher, two amazing people who were hacked in 2021 and had $20,000 stolen from them just when they were about to place a down payment on their house. And so began a long, arduous, and disheartening journey to try and get their money back and get justice served on the hacker: two things that turned out to be much easier said than done.
Going through such an experience could cause someone to become buried in a deep well of bitterness, but instead of dwelling in their pain, Shane and Emily decided to channel it into something positive, pouring all of their frustrated emotions from the online theft into a cathartic project that would become Hacked: A Double Entendre of Rage Fueled Karma, the first ten minutes of which depict real events that happened to Shane and Emily, while the rest of the movie shows what they wish they could have done to the hacker who took their money and strained their sanity.
I remember Shane and Emily telling me about Hacked all the way back in 2022 after the theatrical world premiere of their film Breathing Happy (another movie that I highly recommend watching if you haven't seen it and watching again if you've already had the pleasure) at Popcorn Frights Film Festival in Miami Beach, so I've been eagerly waiting years to see it come to life onscreen. And with Hacked: A Double Entendre of Rage-Fueled Karma now on VOD (including Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV) via S&R films following its theatrical run, the wait is finally over... and it was well worth it.
Brady's latest cinematic experience delivers a powerful story of vengeance that is grounded in a family's love for one another while also soaring into bloody realms of revenge fantasies and wish fulfillments with a little help from Santa Claus himself (played by the legendary Richard Riehle). Soaked in Brady's signature energetic style and cooked to perfection in the Florida sunshine, Hacked: A Double Entendre of Rage Fueled Karma is brimming with great performances, including Chandler Riggs like you've never seen him before as the elusive hacker known as The Chameleon.
To celebrate the release of Hacked: A Double Entendre of Rage Fueled Karma, I had the great pleasure of catching up with writer/director Shane Brady (who also stars in the film), producer Emily Zercher, and cast members Chandler Riggs, Katelyn Nacon, Owen Atlas, Collin Thompson, and Augie Duke to discuss the making of their ambitious movie, including capturing the vibrancy of their filming locations in Tampa, coming up with different ways to torture The Chameleon, turning real-life pain into creative gains, and embracing the idea that the "family who slays together, stays together."
