Last year at SDCC, we first shared with Daily Dead readers that Jim Fletcher, the award-winning creative director behind DC Uniformz, the DC Black and White statue series, and many other beloved projects, has been working on a new book of fantastical creature faces he's named Flippitoons: “Never before could one masquerade as two other creatures by means of only one mask - now that all changes. Gaze in the mirror & behold : with one turn of the mask the face of one fantastical creature gazes back at you, yet turn the mask again & regard how a second creature now stares through your eyes!”
Fletcher has teamed up with James Martin and Clover Press to release Flippitoons Odditome of Deadlies and Dreadlies Volume 1, "a beautiful, playful artbook where each drawing can be flipped upside down to reveal a brand-new character." Ahead of the Kickstarter campaign launch for this one-of-a-kind book this month, we're excited to give Daily Dead readers an exclusive look at the cover, along with a reveal of one of the Flippitoon creatures and an animation that highlights the fun, reversible nature of Fletcher's art.
Co-written by Fletcher and Martin, with extensive illustrations from Fletcher, Flippitoons Odditome of Deadlies and Dreadlies Volume 1 is a "gorgeous, head-turning 224-page 10” X 10” deluxe hardcover art book," soon available on Kickstarter:
“Flippitoons are creatures that I discovered one day while doodling,” explains Fletcher. “One sketch mysteriously tumbled off my desk and glided to the floor, seemingly flipping over of its own accord as it fell. As I attempted to pick it up, the image kept turning over, showing me the surprise potential of its other half! I soon realized that this was no coincidence, and a multitude of Flipittoons creatures were waiting to be discovered, just beyond our reality. That was when I realized that the field of Oddibiology, or the study of odd things, was where I wanted, no, needed to be! With fellow Odddibodologist James Martin, who quickly recognized what these creatures are, this collector art book is our first attempt to catalogue the Flippitoons (at least the ones we have captured so far) and we hope you will have a flippintastic time exploring its pages!”
In the world of Flippitoons reality is flipped on its head. Jim S. Fletcher, (the S is silent) holds the highest degree in the dubious field of Oddibodology and has been diligently studying and cataloging Flippitoons. Fletcher and Martin’s observations on these elusive beings will soon be published in the collector art book that chronicles their flipped out findings. The Flippitoons Odditome of Deadlies and Dreadlies Volume 1 takes the viewer into the Flippi-verse of phenomenal creatures and their inverse personalities. When you flip the book over, right side up or upside down, you will then see each creature transform into ["scaracters"] of another kind.
The main character illustrations are accompanied by lines of rhyming prose that can be read no matter which way you flip the book. Some of the fearsome, freaky and fabulous Flippitoons characters will also feature in their own unique 30-45 second Flippimations with original music composed by Fletcher to reflect each creature’s personality.
