Back in February, we broke the news that SHP Comics acquired worldwide English-language publishing rights to Grandes de lo Macabro, the celebrated graphic horror anthology by Spanish artist Joan Boix. As part of the recently released ZOOP campaign, backers get access to a digital comic book early to give them a tease of what's to come. One of the more gruesome stories is titled Girl From Mars, and we have an exclusive preview just for Daily Dead readers!
According to Shawn Hainsworth, publisher of SHP Comics, who is adapting the stories in English, “Tales of the Macabre represents exactly the kind of project we love at SHP Comics — bold, visually distinctive storytelling that deserves to reach a new audience. These stories are drawn from the rich tradition of classic horror authors like H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe, while Joan Boix’s extraordinary artwork brings them to life with both intricate detail and masterful visual storytelling. We’re incredibly excited to publish these adaptations in English for the very first time and introduce readers to a remarkable piece of horror comics history.”
Originally published in Spanish by Aleta Ediciones, Grandes de lo Macabro gathers twenty chilling tales as told by Joan Boix, which have been colored and reimagined for modern audiences by SHP Comics. These stories are a compelling mix of original narratives intertwined with masterful adaptations of classic horror fiction, inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Franz Kafka, Edgar Allan Poe, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
“This is a pleasant surprise, seeing my work, initially in black and white, now published by SHP Publishing in magnificent color” says Joan Boix. “I can only express my gratitude for their superb work.”
Joan Boix is a celebrated Spanish comics creator whose prolific career spans decades and genres. While his work has appeared in horror anthologies and genre publications over the years, Grandes de lo Macabro represents a definitive showcase of his distinctive work, which has remained largely inaccessible to English-language readers until now.
The campaign is live through comics crowdfunding platform ZOOP now, with exclusive perks and more for those who back this edition before it lands at retail later this year(?)!
