"I know what my father was, what he did..." With the SXSW Film Festival kicking off this weekend, HBO gave Game of Thrones fans a late winter treat by announcing that season 7 will premiere on July 16th, 2017.

HBO made the long-awaited announcement via a Facebook Live event, in which a block of ice literally melted to unveil the season 7 premiere date.

A new teaser video (see below) for the seventh season was also revealed on the official Game of Thrones Twitter page. Although it doesn't feature actual season 7 footage, its ominous voiceovers do get the blood pumping for what's to come.

According to EW, season 7 of Game of Thrones will consist of seven episodes, followed by an eighth (and, expectedly, last) season that is slated to include six episodes.

Game of Thrones fans attending SXSW can look forward to the series' involvement in the immersive event HBO: The Escape, as well as a panel featuring co-stars Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner and showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
