Shudder Honors Stephen King: Press Release: (April 30, 2018, New York, NY) – Shudder, the leading premium streaming service for thriller, suspense, and horror, is turning May into Stephen King Month with a selection of the best movies and miniseries from the monarch of horror.  These hard-to-find thrillers, including the original IT miniseries, Salem’s LotCreepshow and Cat’s Eye, will be available exclusively to Shudder members beginning May 1, 2018:

  • IT -  IT rises from dank, dark places. IT preys on children. IT knows exactly what scares you and IT never goes away.  This 1990 TV mini-series put the town of Derry on the map and instilled a well-deserved fear of balloons and clowns in a generation with actor Tim Curry’s terrifying portrayal of Pennywise.
  • SALEM'S LOT - When vampires invade a small New England resort town, one man must face his worst fears to stop the blood-sucking creatures' plan to take over the innocent community of Salem's Lot.  Directed by Tobe Hooper of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame, this 1979 adaptation of King's best-selling novel presented a fresh and disturbing take on the vampire legend that still delivers the thrills.
  • CREEPSHOW - Two masters of horror--novelist Stephen King and director George Romero, team up to terrorize with a spine-tingling anthology, Creepshow. Based on classic horror comics, loaded with special effects and featuring a cameo from King himself, Creepshow is a funhouse ride of campy scares.
  • CAT'S EYE - A stray cat guides us through each tale in this Stephen King-based anthology favorite. Heavy on the suspense and featuring a young Drew Barrymore, Cat’s Eye offers a quirky take on classic King fare.

CreepshowCat’s EyeSalem’s Lot and of course the blockbuster miniseries It, featuring Tim Curry’s gleefully malevolent performance as Pennywise, are some of the most iconic Stephen King movies and series ever made,” said Craig Engler, general manager of Shudder. “We’re excited to have them exclusively on Shudder during Stephen King month, where they can be discovered by new fans and binged again by old fans. It’s part of our commitment to deliver the largest, and best collection of horror, thriller, and suspense to Shudder members.”

Steel City Underground Film Festival: "Linz, Austria - Sodom & Chimera Productions, known for their experimental features and short films, is inviting like-minded filmmakers to Europe this September with the inception of the Steel City Underground Film Festival (SCUFF). A celebration of horror, arthouse, experimental and weird cinema, SCUFF is curated and hosted by Sodom & Chimera's founder James Quinn (Flesh of the Void, Sulphur for Leviathan).

SCUFF is looking for productions ranging from surreal expressionist works to polished and cinematic horror thrillers, with special consideration for visually interesting, grotesque, wildly unusual, incredibly artistic or just downright weird films.

The festival will take place on September 21 and 22 in Linz at the KAPU, an infamous punk rock venue and underground cinema with a long history that includes one of the earliest Nirvana concerts.

In a festival first, all selected features and shorts will be screened in 16mm, paid for by the submission fees.

Speaking of his vision for the festival, Quinn said, "The mission of SCUFF is not only to bring independent, international horror, arthouse and experimental films to an Austrian audience, but also to revive a screening format that is, unfortunately, fading from theaters and venues, which is a 16mm film. The goal here is not only to give the viewers a unique experience but to give filmmakers the chance to screen their film in a way they might otherwise never get the chance to, on film. Driven by passion, we want to give horror fans the chance to see some of the most infamous classics on beautiful prints. We stand for horror, independent filmmaking, and the revival of celluloid."

Awards will be given out for Best Feature, Best Narrative Short, Best Experimental/Arthouse and Best Weird/Extreme. Instead of a typical statuette or plaque, the winners will receive an HD scan of the 16mm print of their film, done by a professional lab in Vienna.

In addition to the official selections, SCUFF will host screenings of 16mm prints of iconic horror and experimental milestones such as Nosferatu (1922, with live music),  Frankenstein (1931), Tod Browning's Freaks (1932), A Trip to the Moon (1902) and Un Chien Andalou (1929). Each of the classics will be preceded by a selected short.

Broken Star Acquired by Gravitas Ventures: Press Release: "Kandoo Films, the full-service production company based in Los Angeles, announced today that Gravitas Ventures has acquired BROKEN STAR, featuring Analeigh Tipton (CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE). This is the first film from Kandoo’s new feature film slate aimed at discovering emerging talent. Founder Howard Barish, a recipient of the 2017 BAFTA and Emmy Award for Best Documentary 13TH, is fully financing and producing the slate’s six to eight productions, with BROKEN STAR first out of the gate. Gravitas will open the thriller in theaters and VOD on July 20, 2018. Foreign sales will be handled at Cannes 2018 by Red Sea Media.

BROKEN STAR is a psychological thriller that follows a young actress who goes to great lengths in order to ensure everlasting fame. Directed by first-time feature film director Dave Schwep and written by David Brant, the film stars Tipton alongside Tyler Labine (SUPER TROOPERS 2, RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES), Monique Coleman (HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL) and Lauren Bowles (HALL PASS, THE HEARTBREAK KID). Schwep takes viewers on an intense journey of self-discovery, introspection and twisted sadistic revenge.

“We’ve always admired Gravitas’ support of independent films and emerging filmmakers, so we couldn’t think of better partners to distribute Dave Schwep’s first feature,” said Barish. “When we got our hands on first-time writer David Brant’s script, we were captivated by his talent and gripping story. It was exciting to see the talented veteran cast come together and bring Schwep and Brant’s visions to life.”

Laura Florence, VP of Sales & Marketing, Gravitas Ventures, added: “We are delighted to partner with Kandoo Films and Howard Barish on BROKEN STAR. A gripping thriller that showcases the talented Analeigh Tipton and Tyler Labine, it will leave audiences on the edge of their seats and wanting more from the first-time director and writer.”

Barish is a veteran of the entertainment industry and has helped launch Ava DuVernay’s directing career by co-producing her award-winning feature MIDDLE OF NOWHERE and most recently, the Oscar-nominated documentary 13TH. Launched in Spring 2017, Barish was instrumental in the creation of Kandoo’s new low-budget film slate to showcase emerging filmmakers outside of the studio system.

Eric Feig, Esq., Matthew Jacobs, Esq. and Peter Flanigan, Esq. of Eric Feig Entertainment & Media Law, Inc., handled legal affairs for the film’s production on behalf of Kandoo Films."
