In today's Horror Highlights, we have the trailer and poster for Philip Chidel's post-apocalyptic thriller The Outer Wild. We also have details on Drunken Devil's Halloween extravaganza Bacchanalia, and details on Stealing Fire: The Mastery of the Outsider, a new class featuring a conversation between artist Joe Coleman and writer/producer Heather Buckley as part of The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies in New York City.

Check Out a Trailer and Poster for The Outer Wild: "THE OUTER WILD was written and directed by Philip Chidel (SUBJECT TWO), and stars Lauren McKnight (SO UNDERCOVER), Christian Oliver (HOUSE OF GOOD AND EVIL), Jeffrey Vincent Parise (CW's "Supernatural"), Tory Taranova (EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!!), Jimmy Jean-Louis (NBC's "Heroes"), and Zach Roerig (CW's "The Vampire Diaries").

THE OUTER WILD is a genre-bending thriller, part post-apocalyptic western and part Sci-Fi/horror/thriller, a generation after the unnatural event that has destroyed mankind. A new breed of creature, mutated from man, now runs the earth. Survivors live in colonies meant for protection — but mutations continue, and numbers are dwindling. Man’s time on Earth is over.

Now, a girl named Laura might hold the key to saving everyone. But when an experiment goes horribly wrong, she flees the colony to head for a refuge that may or may not exist — a fabled safe haven under a mysterious red star, where life is rumored to be as perfect as it should be. She is pursued by a bounty hunter named Cole, who ultimately helps her find this better place. But to get there, they must brave a dangerous wilderness infested with creatures both known and not.

As Laura discovers the lands outside the Colony for the first time, she finds this world is nothing like she had been told. Morality seems to have been lost along with mankind in the crisis that had killed the earth, and the lines between man and animal are blurred. Now, as she and Cole pioneer their way towards a better future, Laura questions whether mankind is worth saving — and in the end, she must face a final sacrifice that will determine the place for humanity at the end of the world.

Drunken Devil's Bacchanalia Halloween Party Details: "Following the success of Bloody Gras, To Live and Di(n)e in LA, and Sin-A-Rama, Drunken Devil reveals its Halloween special event: Bacchanalia, a wild evening inspired by both the sadistic rule of Caligula and the hedonistic Roman festivals of Bacchus. Drunken Devil's current party series explores the seven deadly sins, with characters based off each, and Bacchanalia will focus on Caligula as the embodiment of "Gluttony," with attendees immersing themselves in an interactive storyline and indulging in a feast for the senses.

In Bacchanalia, Drunken Devil guests will be welcomed into the court of one of Rome's most infamous rulers, Caligula, and invited to participate in an interactive storyline featuring elements of the ancient Roman festival in honor of the god of wine, Bacchus. The immersive narrative will focus on Caligula’s salacious and scandalous reign and guests will find themselves embroiled in a potential plot to overthrow the emperor. As attendees engage with the story, a raucous party will roar around them and all guests can indulge in the open bar featuring craft cocktails, beer, and -of course- wine.

In addition to the immersive elements and lavish, sinister atmosphere, the guests will enjoy burlesque acts from Erin Bridges (Poetry Cabaret), Olivia Bellafontaine (House of Red Velvet and Blue Velvet), Miss Marquez (Marijuana Madness), Brynn Route (Miss Pole Dance America 2016), and international burlesque performer, Miss Miranda. In addition, the event will feature strolling magic from Academy of Magical Arts Member Jackson Ridd and mystic Zac Young, and dance to the dark disco stylings of DJ Kerry and DJ James Jordan.

"With Drunken Devil, we strive to create the ideal horror nightlife atmosphere and Bacchanalia aims to be our most indulgent and haunting event to date as we bring the audience into the center of drama and intrigue of Caligula's court,” stated Matt Dorado, Founder and Executive Producer of Drunken Devil. “The festivals of Bacchus were some of the first recorded wild parties in history, and we welcome everyone to indulge in sin, and celebrate Halloween with this dark spin on the original sinful soiree!”

Bacchanalia will take place on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at a secret location in Downtown Los Angeles. The location will be revealed to ticket-holders the day before the event. Guests are encouraged to dress to impress with formalwear fit for Roman gods, but please note Bacchanalia is not a toga party. Tickets to the strictly 21+ celebration are all-inclusive, priced at $85.00, and expected to sell out quickly!

Tickets for Drunken Devil’s Bacchanalia are now available at www.restlessnites.com/bacchanalia

Stealing Fire: The Mastery of the Outsider Details: "The Miskatonic Institute Horror Studies - NYC brings you into the world of the artistic Outsider with a unique conversation between film writer/producer Heather Buckley and Brooklyn artist Joe Coleman as they delve into the many characteristics and themes at play in Outsider art, with an intimate focus on symbols and cinema.

There are those who have formally studied their craft—at Universities, through mentorship in pursuit of a vocation through the brush, the scalpel; the camera. There are others that hone the craft as an Outsider, picking up the tools of the Masters to endeavor their own marks, without training guided only by the need to express and to make—to overturn rocks by hand and discover the forbidden.

Joe Coleman has been the Outsider—a Brooklyn artist, carny, once charged with harboring an “infernal device,” picked up these very tools of Creation—the pen and the brush—to create a maelstrom of images and words. He, possessed by arcane narratives, conjures his paintings as they unfold into tapestries of killers, sinners, self-portraits, counter-culture saints and martyrs. His hand untrained but true.

There is an intersection, by accident or intent, where the Master and the Outsider create symbols and works that mirror. There are places where The Master is unsure to go but the Outsider without the boundaries of convention walks into dangerous territory where the soul is confronted and everything is changed and what is a dream and what is real is combined and elevated.

To understand this borderland we must compare objects and acts. And in this unique live conversation moderated by film writer and producer Heather Buckley, Joe Coleman will investigate a series of films and the ways that concepts of high and low art intersect in and around them. The first will be Gerald Kargl’s Angst (1983) and John Parker’s Dementia aka Daughters of Horror (1955) — exploring the serial killer story. Godard’s Alphaville (1965) and Ed Wood Jr.’s Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959) — a comparison of the cast and similar iconography over both works. Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch (1969) and Charles Brabin’s Beast of the City (1932) — a look at the depiction of violence; realism vs expressionism. And finally, an exploration of an autopsy as performance and in cinema, the trained hand vs. the Outsider.

  • Tamika Jones
About the Author - Tamika Jones

Tamika hails from North Beach, Maryland, a tiny town inches from the Chesapeake Bay.She knew she wanted to be an actor after reciting a soliloquy by Sojourner Truth in front of her entire fifth grade class. Since then, she's appeared in over 20 film and television projects. In addition to acting, Tamika is the Indie Spotlight manager for Daily Dead, where she brings readers news on independent horror projects every weekend.

The first horror film Tamika watched was Child's Play. Being eight years old at the time, she remembers being so scared when Chucky came to life that she projectile vomited. It's tough for her to choose only one movie as her favorite horror film, so she picked two: Nosferatu and The Stepford Wives (1975).
