Back in late July, Len Wiseman (Underworld, Total Recall) stepped down as the director of The Mummy reboot for Universal, due to scheduling conflicts. We were wondering who Universal would hire to replace it and it's looking like Andres Muschietti is interested in taking over.
The Mama director is currently talk with Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This isn't official yet, but it makes sense given Mama's success at the box office. With a budget of only$15 million, the movie earned more than $145 in ticket sales worldwide.
There are a lot of unknowns at this point, including what will happen to Jon Spaihts' script if Muschietti signs on. What we do know is that this script is said to be a modern take on the classic story and will focus more on horror elements. Universal originally wanted this movie movie to have a summer 2014 theatrical release, but it's starting to look unlikely at this point. We'll let our readers know as soon as more details become available.
