Though it will take place in the early days of the zombie uprising, Fear The Walking Dead will focus on the living more than the dead, and Robert Kirkman recently discussed the show's core characters, including several who are shown in new photos.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly's Dalton Ross, Kirkman discussed the background of Madison, the series' widowed mother of two (Kim Dickens):

"Madison is a character whose husband died. And she’s been raising her kids on her own, so she’s a character that has experienced a very abrupt change to her life that she has had to adapt to."

Kirkman also talked about Madison's kids, Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Nick (Frank Dillane), who are complete opposites:

"Alicia is your atypical teenage girl. She excels at school. She’s on her way to college... She’s kind of the model student and the model child.

"In the face of that, we’ve got Nick—who is played by Frank Dillane—who is pretty much a parent’s worst nightmare. He has flunked out of college, had a lot of trouble, got mixed up in some bad elements, and is definitely the problem child. And it’s exacerbated for him to be next to this perfect sister who seemingly doesn’t have anything going on in her life that is negative. But that’s not really the case, that’s just his perception."

Providing a concrete-like solidity to Madison's hectic life is her boyfriend, Travis (Cliff Curtis), who Kirkman also discussed:

"He’s [Travis] her [Madison's] foundation. He’s come into this and become a part of her life and definitely is someone she’s leaned on. He’s definitely got a darkness to his past... He is finding himself torn between Liza, his ex-wife, and Madison."

Three new Fear The Walking Dead photos (below) show Madison, Travis, Alicia, and Alicia's boyfriend, Matt (Maestro Harrell).

“Fear the Walking Dead,” which is set in Los Angeles and focuses on new characters and storylines, stars Kim Dickens (Gone Girl, “Sons of Anarchy”) as Madison, Cliff Curtis (“Missing,” “Gang Related”) as Travis, Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) as Nick and Alycia Debnam-Carey (Into the Storm) as Alicia. Also joining the cast as series regulars are Elizabeth Rodriguez (“Orange is the New Black”) as Liza and Mercedes Mason (Quarantine 2: Terminal) as Ofelia."

"A companion series to “The Walking Dead,” the #1 show on television among adults 18-49, “Fear the Walking Dead” is executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, David Alpert and showrunner David Erickson and produced by AMC Studios. Co-Executive Producer Adam Davidson, who directed the pilot, is also directing the second and third episodes. The series’ first season, consisting of six one-hour episodes, will premiere on AMC in late summer."

It was also revealed that Sandrine Holt (The ReturnedTerminator Genisys) and Rubén Blades (Predator 2, Once Upon a Time in Mexico) have joined the cast of Fear The Walking Dead. Holt will play Dr. Bethany Exner and Blades will portray Ofelia's father, Daniel.
