While James Wan directed the first two Conjuring movies, the third big-screen adventure of Ed and Lorraine Warren will be helmed by filmmaker Michael Chaves.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals the news that Chaves will direct The Conjuring 3 from a script by David Leslie Johnson (one of the co-writers on The Conjuring 2 and James Wan's Aquaman, and writer of numerous episodes of AMC's The Walking Dead).

After the well-received 2016 debut of his short film The Maiden, Chaves was brought on to direct The Curse of La Llorona for New Line Cinema, which is due out on April 19th, 2019 and was produced by James Wan. THR reveals that while collaborating with Chaves on The Curse of La Llorona, Wan determined that the fellow filmmaker would be a great fit to direct The Conjuring 3:

“While working closely with Chaves on The Curse of La Llorona, I got to know him as a filmmaker. Chaves’ ability to bring emotion to a story, and his understanding of mood and scares make him a perfect fit to direct the next Conjuring film.”

As with the first two Conjuring movies, the third film will feature the return of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, characters based on the real-life paranormal investigators of the same names.

According to THR, Wan confirmed the return of Wilson and Farmiga in the third film, saying, "I'm excited to be back as producer and continue with Vera and Patrick on the next supernatural adventure of the Warrens."

Here's what Chaves had to say about coming aboard The Conjuring franchise (via THR) and reuniting with Wan:

“I am a huge fan of the Conjuring films. The movies are the rare combination that deliver both tremendous heart and awesome scares. It is both a total thrill and absolute honor to be working with James and the gang at New Line again.”

Since The Conjuring came out in theaters in the summer of 2013, the franchise has expanded to encompass a number of spin-off films, with The Nun currently haunting theaters and a third Annabelle movie (featuring the Warren's daughter) on the way.

An official release date for The Conjuring 3 has yet to be announced, but we'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are revealed.
