After a very successful run of releasing their debut titles, indie graphic novel publisher The Lab Press has announced that they're launching a new range of compact editions. Included among their key titles getting the compact edition treatment is Essentials, and we have an exclusive 12-page preview you can read right now, along with all the details on their portable edition rollout:

From the Press Release: "As The Lab Press approaches the end of their second year of publishing following a string of award wins for their debut titles, the acclaimed indie graphic novel publisher debuts a range of new compact editions featuring some of their key titles. Designed to appeal to readers who prefer to enjoy their books on the go, these new versions–dubbed Portable Editions–build on The Lab’s ongoing commitment to getting books into people’s hands without compromising on quality or design.

The first three books to receive the Portable Editions treatment are all from The Lab’s first year of publishing–starting with Essentials Volume 1 by Luke Arnold, Chris ‘Doc’ Wyatt, and a vast array of talented artists; Super Science Volume 1 by N. Alessandro K. and M.K. Perker; and Creatures & Corridors by Brandon Auman and Andrea Mutti. Each of these titles has been critically-acclaimed and honored with various accolades for story, art and design, including wins at the prestigious IPPY Awards, Storytrade Awards, Foreword INDIES Awards, and the Independent Book Publishers Association Awards.

In the pages of Essentials Volume 1, brilliant mathematician Harris Pax has predicted the end of the world, but failed to prevent it. Now he's living alone in a bunker and his niece's favorite toys have started talking to him. The good news? He's not the world's sole survivor. The bad news? The other survivors are trapped in alternate realities–imprisoned in imagined worlds full of zombies, robots, mythical creatures, and chaos. Now Harris Pax and an unlikely ally must travel the country on a quest to restore reality, save humanity, and defeat his new interdimensional nemesis: the sinister Snuggles.

“I really like how these new Portable Editions complement the series’ theme of bringing only the Essentials’” says co-creator and co-writer, Chris ‘Doc’ Wyatt. “It is our hope that making Volume 1 available in this easy-to-carry format will encourage even more people to join the adventure while reading on the go.”

The LAB Press is, of course, committed to continuing their award-winning line of high-quality hardcover graphic novels, which they have become known for, and 2027 will see more of those–including the long-awaited release of the aforementioned Super Science Volume 2, as well as other top-secret titles yet to be announced.

“Our hardcovers are built to be collected, while the Portable Editions are built to be carried,” says Editor-in-Chief of The Lab Press, Dagen Walker. “Same full stories, same art, but in a size you can put in your bag and read on the train.”

The first wave of Portable Editions from The Lab Press are available in book and comic shops now, allowing readers to discover (or rediscover) the magic of Essentials Volume 1, Super Science Volume 1, and Creatures & Corridors. Further waves of titles will follow next year with a view to allowing everyone to discover the audacious storytelling The Lab Press have become known for in a format that suits them.
