From the deadly fangs of Dracula to the mysterious depths of the Gill-man, Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics have teamed up with Universal Products & Experiences to bring the iconic Universal Monsters from the big screen to the paneled page in new limited comic book series throughout this year, and for their latest collaboration, they've stepped into the laboratory with renowned writer and artist Michael Walsh for Universal Monsters: Frankenstein!

Written and illustrated by Michael Walsh with colors by Toni-Marie Griffin, Universal Monsters: Frankenstein kicked off the first of four issues on August 28th, and Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of talking with Michael about the opportunity to bring his own unique style to the Frankenstein story, working with colorist Toni-Marie Griffin and the editorial team at Skybound to bring this new twist on the timeless tale to undead life, and he also discussed his love of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, James Whale's 1931 film adaptation, and Bernie Wrightson's masterful illustrated version of Frankenstein. In addition to talking about the exciting process of writing and illustrating Universal Monsters: Frankenstein, Michael Walsh also shared insightful advice for comic book writers and artists who are just getting started!

You can watch our full video interview with Walsh below, and we also have the official press release, preview pages, and cover art from Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #2 ahead of its September 25th release!

Press Release: LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics, in partnership with Universal Products & Experiences, revealed a stacked slate of variant covers and interior pages from Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #2, the next issue of the four-issue limited comic book series from award-winning artist/writer Michael Walsh (The Silver Coin) and colorist Toni-Marie Griffin (Black Hammer/Justice League). This next installment of the new horror classic hits comic book shops September 25, 2024.

Comics superstar Michael Walsh resurrects one of the most iconic monsters of all time in a jaw-dropping, re-imagining of the horror hit. Readers can expect each issue of the limited series to tell the shocking story behind one of the corpse parts used to create the unforgettable monster in the original film.

In this second issue, Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant Fritz has one mission – to find the supplies to make a new human being. However, a chance encounter between a police officer and a murderer may ruin even the best laid plans…

In addition to the main cover by Michael Walsh, Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #2 boasts a variant cover lineup from top artists including Mike Del Mundo, Anwita Citriya, and Martin Simmonds, as well as the second of a four-part connecting cover series by Francesco Francavilla.

Universal Monsters: Frankenstein is the third Universal Monsters comics series launch from Skybound, following James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds’ Dracula (which netted Simmonds a BEST PAINTER/MULTIMEDIA ARTIST (INTERIOR ART) Eisner Award nomination) and Dan Watters, Ram V, and Matthew Roberts’ Creature From the Black Lagoon Lives! Frankenstein will be followed by more new limited series pairing the biggest names in comics with pop culture’s most iconic monsters.
