Weekend Box Office Update

2013/11/24 20:47:04 +00:00 | Jonathan James

With no real competition this weekend and plenty of buzz leading up to its release, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire easily claimed the top spot at the box office with an impressive $161.1 million. This is slightly better than The Hunger Games' $152 million opening weekend last year and the sequel should enjoy a long life at the box office over the holiday season.

Thor: The Dark World is starting to slow down, earning $14 million this weekend. To date, the movie has earned $167.8 million in the US and it will surpass the first movie's total US gross by the time it leaves theaters. The Best Man Holiday took third place, earning an estimated $12.5 million, and crossing the $50 million mark since opening. With a production budget of only $17 million, this movie continues to impress. Unfortunately, Delivery Man wasn't as lucky. The new Vince Vaughn movie was unable to find much of an audience, only making $8.2 million in its opening weekend.

Next week sees the release of Black Navitity and Homefront on Wednesday. Oldboy will also open in theaters on Wednesday, but it's only being given a 500 theater release, so make sure to check your local listings for the closest theater. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - $161,125,000
2. Thor: The Dark World - $14,117,000
3. The Best Man Holiday - $12,522,000
4. Delivery Man - $8,215,000
5. Free Birds - $5,300,000
6. Last Vegas - $4,400,000
7. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa - $3,450,000
8. Gravity - $3,305,000
9. 12 Years a Slave - $2,800,000
10. Dallas Buyers Club - $2,770,000
