Weekend Box Office Update

None of this weekend's new releases were any match for The Hobbit, which easily claimed the top spot once again with $36.7 million. The movie is currently playing in 4,100 theaters and has earned nearly $150 million in the US since first opening.

Due to their modest production budgets, Jack Reacher and This is 40 didn't have a horrible weekend, but it wasn't the most impressive either. Jack Reacher had an estimated production budget of $60 million and earned $15.6 million. This is 40 is Judd Apatow's latest comedy and earned $12 million.

The most interesting thing about the top ten is that many of the spots are still being held by movies that opened in November. Rise of the Guardians, Lincoln, Skyfall, Life of Pi, and Breaking Dawn Part 2 are all hanging in there, but we'll lose at least a couple of them between now and next weekend.

Next week's wide releases include Django Unchained, Les Miserables, and Parental Guidance, which will all be released on Tuesday. Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - $36,705,000
2. Jack Reacher - $15,600,000
3. This is 40 - $12,031,000
4. Rise of the Guardians - $5,900,000
5. Lincoln - $5,633,000
6. The Guilt Trip - $5,390,000

8. Skyfall - $4,700,000
9. Life of Pi - $3,800,000
