It's been rumored that the theme of American Horror Story Season 3 would be witches, but has it now been confirmed? Dylan McDermott has been a big part of American Horror Story's first two seasons, so we assume the man knows what he's talking about. In a recent interview with E!, he commented on Kathy Bates joining the Season 3 cast, saying she's perfect for the show:
"She really is. All the witches of Salem…there's plenty of them!"
It hasn't been confirmed that McDermott will return for Season 3, but remember that he wasn't confirmed for Season 2 until it had already started airing. While he does have a number of other projects on his plate, he told E! that he could definitely juggle his projects to fit time in for more American Horror Story.
It was previously announced that Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy, Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe and Evan Peters will all be returning for the third season in new roles. The cast is still coming together, so we’re definitely expecting a few more of the past actors to make an appearance, along with some new faces.
Based on past conversations with Ryan Murphy, we know that the new season will be focused on a modern day story, but will include different time periods and different cities. There will be plenty of details revealed over the coming months, but here’s what Murphy recently had to say about the direction the new season will be taking:
“I mean, I don’t think anything could ever be as dark as the mental health care system in our country. I sorta feel like for the third version I want to do something that’s a little bit more “evil glamour.” Just something that’s a little bit more…one of the things that I missed this season was I really loved having that Romeo & Juliet youth story with Violet and Tate. I want something like that again and we’re doing something like that in the third season. And we’re contemplating shooting the show in a different place. We’re contemplating shooting it in a place in the country where true horror has been. We’ve got lots of delicious plans.”
The third season of American Horror Story is expected to premiere later this year, and an October premiere with 13 episodes planned seems likely. We'll be sure to keep readers posted on any new developments.
